BUXTON boss John Reed was left "gutted" and "disappointed" after his injury-hit side were beaten by lowly Frickley Athletic on Saturday.
A 30-yard strike by Danny Walsh – Frickley’s only attempt on goal during the 90 minutes – was enough to seal a 1-0 win.
In contrast, Bucks manager Reed was disappointed at his side’s failure to convert any one of seven good chances in the 18-yard box.
“I’m absolutely gutted we didn’t come back with three points because we only had to deal with that one 30-yard shot,” he said.
“We didn’t play particularly well, but we worked hard and competed brilliantly.”
Buxton started brightly with Michael Towey playing up front in place of the injured strikers Mark Reed and Doryll Profitt.
On 19 minutes, Gav Knight saw a 20-yard shot deflected wide for a corner. Gregg Anderson’s header from the flag kick was pushed over the bar by Frickley keeper Ben Simpson.
Frickley’s only strike on goal came after 20 minutes when Danny Walsh struck a 30-yard half volley past Scott Hartley into the top right corner of the net.
This ultimately proved decisive, despite Buxton having the vast majority of the play throughout the 90 minutes.
Kieran Lugsden shot narrowly over on 23 minutes as Buxton continued to dominate control of the ball, but struggled to trouble the Frickley goal.
On 35 minutes Frickley keeper Simpson injured his back in a collision with his centre backs Heath and Lindley. He lasted until half time, when he was replaced by midfielder Danny Clarke, but Frickley fought a good rearguard action to protect him.
Buxton’s best chances fell to substitute Tommy Agus, who was thrown on up front on the hour mark.
Agus hit two right-footed shots from the 18 yard line following a corner; the first was blocked by a defender’s face on the line, while the second was tipped over by Clarke.
Another Buxton substitute, Geoff McGaw, saw a fine solo run and cross shot deflected to safety off Clarke’s knee.
The afternoon’s frustrations proved too much for Steve Ridley when he was told to retake a throw-in twice, and he was dismissed for foul and abusive language towards the referee.
The last chance for the Bucks fell to Gavin Knight, who broke free of the massed defence and ran 30 yards, only to screw his shot wide of Clarke’s goal.
Thanks to the Buxton Advertiser for the report.
