Buxton FC 1 - 0 Hednesford Town

17 October 2009       Attendance: 352

DREAMS of FA Cup giant-killing were temporarily put to one side on Saturday as Buxton embarked on another — but more realistic — road to Wembley, entertaining old foes Hednesford Town in a low-key FA Trophy First Qualifying Round tie.

The match was an opportunity for everyone at the Silverlands to sit back and catch their breath after a pulsating seven days which had seen the Bucks snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Bradford PA.

No such excitement here on Saturday afternoon against a Hednesford team looking a shadow of its former self. But the match still had its odd moments of drama, and the first came on nine minutes when Tommy Agus upended Ross Dyer while on a pacey run into the box.

There was no complaints from the Buxton camp as Elliott Durrell placed the ball on the spot – were they really expecting keeper Scott Hartley to come to their rescue yet again? The custodian guessed correctly, diving low to his left and clutching Durrell's attempt above head height.

From then on it was the home side that looked the most likely to score, with Gavin Knight heading wide, Joe Wilcox firing a weak shot straight at the keeper and Agus doing the same with a powerful free kick from 25 yards out.

The Bucks had their own penalty shout midway through the half when captain Gregg Anderson was tackled from behind in the Hednesford box by Tyrone Barnett, but both referee and linesman were oblivious to the cries.

Anderson was again instrumental at the heart of Buxton's jittery defence, but the most dangerous of Hednesford's attacks saw Steve Jagielka stroke the ball wide, although Hartley had it covered.

An Agus cross was almost sliced into his own net by defender Ben Bailey, before the breakthrough finally came three minutes before the break.

Steve Ridley found Knight on the edge of the Hednesford box, and the striker did well to control the ball, turn and pick out the unmarked Joe Wilcox, who slotted home with ease to score his first goal for the club.

Buxton seemed content to sit back and protect their lead in the second half, inviting Hednesford pressure in the form of mistimed Barnett headers and a series of off-target Durrell corners and free kicks.

Knight should have secured the win five minutes from time when he dispossessed Zak Martin in his own half.

The striker raced towards goal, shadowed by defender Sean Platt who did just enough to thwart the chance.

The visitors threw bodies forward at the death, but Hartley was in no mood to be beaten as he secured his fourth clean sheet in six matches.
