Buxton FC 3 - 1 Stocksbridge Park Steels

25 August 2009       Attendance: 308

SUPERB Buxton got their first win of the season in style after beating table toppers Stocksbridge on Tuesday night.

The visitors arrived at the Silverlands in stunning form, unbeaten in their previous three matches and with 14 goals under their belt. But Buxton were in great shape and their goal tally could have been much higher but for some excellent saves by visiting keeper Ben Scott.

The Bucks did have the majority of the play in both halves although Scott Hartley produced a couple of fine saves towards the end of the match to ensure his team took all three points.

Former Buck Alvyn Riley had an early chance to put his side ahead but sent his free kick over before Jonathan Froggatt sent a weak shot straight at Ben Scott as he looked for the home side's opener.

A number of attempts by the Bucks then followed as referee Daniel Meeson awarded a succession of free kicks but it wasn't until the 36th minute when Buxton got their rewards.

A shot on goal was blocked by Scott but the ball then rebounded off Stocksbridge's Darren Schofield and into the net, giving Buxton a deserved lead.

Then with just two minutes of the first half remaining, Scott somehow pulled off a fantastic save to deny Buxton's second goal after a great effort by Michael Towey.

After the restart, it was much of the same and the Bucks doubled their lead just three minutes into the second period. Excellent build up play found Froggatt shooting but his effort was blocked by Scott with Towey slicing home the rebound.

The visitors then had a decent spell with Andy Ring forcing a decent save from Hartley before Gregg Anderson dispossessed the on-rushing Jamie Vardy.

A Steve Ridley shot was tipped over the bar by Scott on 59 minutes before Buxton bagged their third of the night. Gav Knight did well to keep the ball in, passed to Froggatt whose shot was deflected off a Stocksbridge defender and the ball then fell to Neil Stevens who was brought down.

Ridley's superbly struck free kick from 25 yards gave Scott no chance as it curled perfectly into the net on 67 minutes.

But the Bucks were still looking for goals and an excellent long range shot by Stevens just went wide on 69 minutes before Knight saw his shot tipped away at the post by Scott.

Five corners for the home side followed before the visitors pulled back a consolation goal through Vardy on 76 minutes.
