DREAMS of an appearance in the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time in almost 50 years came crashing down for Buxton FC on Saturday.
The Bucks were knocked out of the competition after a devastating 15 minute spell at the end of the first half which saw Stourbridge score three times.
Buxton manager John Reed made a triple substitution at half time, introducing Mark Reed, Steve Ridley and Dorryl Proffitt but it was too late for his side to force their way back into the game and Stourbridge went into the hat for Sunday's draw for the first time in their 133 year history.
The stakes were high for both teams with both having the chance to make club history, and Buxton were boosted going into the match with the news that boss Reed would have a full squad of players to pick from for the first time this season.
Indeed, it was the Bucks who were in control for the first 20 minutes of the match though they couldn't take advantage, failing to capitalise on a couple of decent opportunities.
Stourbridge, on the other hand, were quick on the break and had no such problems in converting their chances.
Their first goal came with 29 minutes on the clock when Ryan Rowe headed home after an earlier free kick.
And Rowe added a second just a few minutes later, beating Scott Hartley on 37 minutes to make it 2-0.
With just a minute of the first half remaining, Stourbridge grabbed their third goal of the afternoon, through a fine strike by Sean Evans.
By now the game was well and truly over as a contest and even three sets of fresh legs for the second period couldn't inspire a Buxton comeback.
Ridley's effort on 58 minutes was easily collected by Stuart Brock in the Stourbridge goal before Aaron Drake's long range effort was blocked by Scott Hartley at the other end.
Buxton's misery was further compounded with 74 minutes gone when Stourbridge grabbed their fourth goal of the afternoon.
Hartley had trouble holding onto the ball after blocking a shot by the visitors, but Evans was in the right place at the right time to fire home the rebound and bag himself a brace.
The home side searched in vain for a consolation goal that never came and were left to reflect on a match where the scoreline failed to accurately represent the action.
