Guiseley 3 - 1 Buxton FC

26 January 2010       Attendance:

BUXTON tasted defeat in the league and conceded a league goal for the first time since October in West Yorkshire on Tuesday night.

Unchanged after Saturday's superb showing, the Bucks were soon on the back foot, and from a right wing cross Fitzgerald's powerful far-post header was tipped over the bar by man-of-the-match Scott Hartley.

Guiseley continued to attack convincingly, regularly turning the visitors' defence.

Needham's turn and low shot was parried by Hartley, and good work by Neil Stevens prevented a goal, but that was delayed only until the 18th minute when striker James Walshaw netted with a powerful spot kick, after Gregg Anderson's ill-judged tackle from behind on ex-FC United sharp-shooter Stuart Rudd.

Prior to this goal, the Bucks had gone a remarkable 475 minutes of UniBond football without conceding.

Grant Black's brave intervention on the goal-line prevented a further score, before Buxton at last offered some threat to the home goal with nearly half an hour gone.

Steve Ridley's dangerous high ball into the penalty area was flicked on, under pressure, by Stevens, but Fitzgerald intervened close to goal only for Gavin Knight to blast over from a good position.

The striker repeated the miss ten minutes later from eight yards, after good work by Black and Mark Reed.

Guiseley continued to press and Rudd went close with a header, before the inspired Hartley twice saved with his legs after Tommy Agus lost possession in his own half.

Walshaw eventually doubled his tally with a close-range, near-post header.

Half time proved beneficial for Buxton, who were soon back in contention with a 49th minute strike by Scott Maxfield, his first goal in 16 months.

Knight fired in a cross towards Reed, and when the ball was headed half-clear the player-coach pounced to net with a low drive from 19 yards.

The omens for a revival looked promising for a while as, at last, the Bucks played some passing soccer, but clear chances weren't made at this stage.

After 79 minutes, Guiseley restored their two-goal lead somewhat fortuitously.

Left back Morris' speculative 35-yard dipping drive looped over Hartley and hit the bar, rebounding to striker Muller who netted with a header.

Buxton created and spurned three clear scoring chances after that. Knight's free kick found Anderson well-placed, but the captain's firm header was wayward.

Substitute Cayne Hanley's pace took him clear of the home defence, only for his ground shot to be saved by the keeper's legs. Finally, a brilliant head-high save denied Knight's close-range, far-post volley.
