Buxton FC 1 - 1 Ilkeston Town

14 December 2009       Attendance: 148

BUXTON'S cup-tie against Ilkeston was abandoned after 90 minutes on Monday night, just as the teams were about to go into extra time.

With the score level at 1-1 after normal time, referee Rob Shoebridge took the decision that conditions had deteriorated to such an extent that the game could not continue.

Rain had continued to fall all night and the pitch, already cut-up at the start of the match, was viewed to be too dangerous for play to carry on.

The suggestion was made for the match to go straight to penalties but this was a no-go as it is not allowed within the rules.

The atrocious conditions had proved a challenge for both sides, with Buxton appearing to deal with them much better in the first half.

Mark Reed had opened the scoring in the 19th minute, tapping in from close range after Gregg Anderson headed on Grant Black's corner.

The home side had several good opportunities with most falling to striker Gavin Knight. His first attempt was hit straight at the keeper, and later, following a good move, he was set up by Reed but his fiercely struck volley went over the bar.

Midfielder Neil Stevens had a shot from the edge of area but his effort was just wide of the upright

Ilkeston were mainly limited to long range efforts and often failed to find the target, although Jack Watts should have done better after Buxton's defence was split open with a pin-point accurate pass.

Their best chance had come in the opening minutes when one of Josh Burge's long-range efforts but this was tipped over the bar by Scott Hartley. The Buxton keeper had to be alert just before half time and pulled off a great save to deny Ilkeston's equaliser.

In the second half Buxton's defence held firm against a much more lively Ilkeston side, which fought hard to get back into the game. But it only appeared to be a matter of time before an equaliser would come.

On 57 minutes they somehow managed to miss a great opportunity by again failing get their effort on target, however a change in the Ilkeston line-up paid dividends.

Substitute Gary Ricketts drew the visitors level on 76 minutes. He latched on to a good through ball from Sam Duncum and fired past Hartley, who was unable to stop it flying into the corner.
