Showing a determination to stay in front after leading through an early penalty, Buxton beat their Vanarama National League hosts Darlington 1-0, Tuesday January 28, inflicting on them their first home defeat since August.

Bucks' team manager John McGrath made one change to his starting line-up from Saturday, Josh Popoola, who sent off in the second half for two yellows, replacing Tommy Elliott in attack.

It was a front-foot opening for the Bucks, with livewire Johnny Johnston causing the Quakers' defence trouble twice before he was brought down by goalie Pete Jamieson in the box and Luke Brennan stepped up with a 12th minute penalty, the only score of this tight game. Closest to adding to the tally was Kieran Burton after 73 minutes, when his powerful header was cleared off the line.

The victory moves Buxton above Darlington in the league table, going into Saturday's home encounter with Southport in eighth place. Match Report HERE

John McGrath said afterwards: "This was hard-fought. We started well. defended as a unit, the midfield was excellent and we ran out worthy winners overall. It's a tough place to come and this was a very satisfying result, down to sheer hard work and togetherness.

"It's great to see our young group learning as the season unfurls. The lads are learning and will only get better. It bodes well for the future. It will be nice to go back home after two away wins and we'll be giving our all.

The Southport match at Tarmac Silverlands kicks off at 3pm.
