Diego De Girolamo made it 100 competitive match goals for Buxton as he opened the scoring against Tamworth in the 2-1 home victory (Tuesday November 31). The ex-Sheffield United and Italy U20s striker has reached double figures in each of his five seasons at the Tarmac Silverlands.
His goal after 39 minutes set the Bucks up for a had-fought win against high-flying Tamworth, inflicting a first away defeat on them this season. A Connor Kirby penalty near the end looked to have sealed the points until a scare, when the visitors reduced the deficit with a penalty of their own, raising alarm bells over the possibility of another late set-back for the Bucks. But they held out to move into sixth place in the table. Full Match Report HERE
Team manager Craig Elliott was full of praise for Diego’s achievement. He said: “I’m really pleased for him and he’s been a great servant for the club. It’s rare to see that sort of commitment these days.”
Of the game. Craig added: “Fortunately, Tamworth missed a first-half penalty, then Diego set us on the road to victory. We had to pull together and grind out this one, with substitutes coming on to make their contributions. It was tight. We’ll play better, but we did all that was needed against a really good team.
“Players are coming back from injury and we need to get them fully fit so we can build on what is now a play-offs position. Our next two games, away to Bishop’s Stortford and South Shields, involve long journeys. They’ll be difficult games for different reasons but we’ll be ready for these new challenges.”
The Bucks travel to Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire on Saturday, kick-off 3pm and we have been drawn at home to City of Liverpool in the 2nd Qual Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy with the match to be played on Saturday 18th of November.
