Buxton needed to defend well against high-flying Darlington (Tuesday October 25th) and goals by Shaun Brisley and Scott Boden were enough to ensure a 2-1 victory. An 87th minute strike by the visitors meant a nail-biting finish but this solid performance against one the Vanarama National League North's top clubs bodes well for the rest of the season.
Team manager Jamie Vermiglio made three changes from Saturday's game. In came Diego de Girolamo, Declan Poole and Josh Granite, who resumed the captaincy. They contributed to an all-around improvement after the set-back at Brackley Town.
Jamie Vermiglio confirmed his delight. He said: "We didn't have a lot of the ball, particularly in the second half, which meant our defence needed to be extra-strong, and it was.
"Our shape was maintained from start to finish, helped by Josh's on-field leadership. The work rate was excellent, with and without the ball. There was a lot of energy and I could hear how much our supporters appreciated it. The crowd helped us out during the tough last few minutes in particular. That was so important to us.
"We go to Southport on Saturday, another former Football League club, sitting sixth in the table. They're a well-drilled side with a fast, direct style, but we'll be up for it." Full Match Report HERE
