In a tightly contested Vanarama National League North encounter, Tuesday February 25th, home side Hereford ran out 2-1 winners against hard-working Buxton. Cian Coleman scored for the Bucks after 75 minutes but was sent off shortly afterwards for a second yellow. After their win, Hereford are fourth in the league table, the Bucks are ninth.
Buxton's team manager John McGrath brought Connor Kirby, Coleman and Kieran Burton into his starting line-up and it was the visitors who dominated the early exchanges, bringing the save of the game from Hereford's Theo Richardson, a former favourite with the Tarmac Silverlands faithful and on loan from AFC Fylde, after only nine minutes. Next, another acrobatic Richardson stop denied Luke Brennan's powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Hereford took the lead just before the half-time whistle through Campbell. Babos added their second after 69 minutes, before Coleman's consolation goal. Johnny Johnston came close to a late equaliser, but Hereford held on for the points.
John McGrath said there were plenty of positives to take from the match. He commented: "I thought the lads were brilliant at times, making me proud, but decisions didn't go our way.
"After the 45th minute setback we came out strongly in the second half, before they scored an outstanding goal from a set piece. Cian pulled one back, then his sending off was really harsh. Right up to the end we looked the better team and had two big penalty shouts denied.
"Our aim remains to reach the play-offs. Scunthorpe on Saturday will be tough and they'll bring big supporter numbers with them. The Railway End will make themselves heard over and above, I'm sure."
Saturday's home game against Scunthorpe United is due to start at 3pm.
